چکیده

Opinion Polls can be used as a means to reach weak agreement, an idea introduced by the LOCKSS system [1]. In this paper, we investigate a set of protocols that achieve data resilience for the long-term using a peer-to-peer network, where mutually untrusted peers are loosely organized. Peers use Opinion Polls to heal corrupted copies of data items instead of conventional methods that use consensus algorithms or cryptography to sign data. We give a brief overview of how LOCKSS performs Opinions, improve the current algorithms, and evaluates our protocols in terms of their performance and security against adversary attacks. *N. Predicting the Brexit outcome using singular spectrum analysis

In a referendum conducted in the United Kingdom (UK) on June 23, 2016, $51.6\%$ of the participants voted to leave the European Union (EU). The outcome of this referendum had major policy and financial impact for both UK and EU, and was seen as a surprise because the predictions consistently indicate that the ``Remain'''' would get a majority. In this paper, we investigate whether the outcome o...

Predicting election trends with Twitter: Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump

Forecasting opinion trends from real-time social media is the long-standing goal of modern-day big-data analytics. Despite its importance, there has been no conclusive scientific evidence so far that social media activity can capture the opinion of the general population at large. Here we develop analytic tools combining statistical physics of complex networks, percolation theory, natural langu...

Reanalysis of Iowa Political Stock Market

From IPSM’s data in 1988, Forsythe and his colleagues proved that even though there were substantial judgment bias, Iowa Political Stock Market worked quite well in the sense that its estimation of presidential candidates’ popular vote share surprisingly close, much better than the forecasts of opinion-polls. They explained that the judgment bias only referred to average traders, but market pri...

Modelling Political Popularity: An Analysis of Long Range Dependence in Opinion Poll Series

A simple model of political popularity, as recorded by opinion polls of voting intentions, is proposed. We show that, as a consequence of aggregating heterogeneous poll responses under certain assumptions about the evolution of individual opinion, the time series of poll data should exhibit long memory characteristics. In an analysis of the monthly Gallup data on party support in the UK, we con...

Forecasting the Vote: A Theoretical Comparison of Election Markets and Public Opinion Polls

The dominant methodology for short-term forecasting of electoral outcomes uses trial-heat polls, where respondents report their current electoral preferences (not their election-day predictions). Election markets, where self-selected participants trade shares of candidates at prices predictive of election-day results, provide an alternative method that often produces more accurate forecasts. Co...
